STC president Wanda Shirk and STC Vice President John Zimmer facilitate shuttles to any road crossings on the STS or in the Susquehannock State Forest. Usually John does shuttles that start or end in Cross Fork or Ole Bull or any southern sections of the trail, and Wanda does shuttles that start or end at Patterson Park or the northern trail head on Rt. 6 - Denton Hill. John lives in Cross Fork, and Wanda lives north of Denton Hill, so usually John covers the south and Wanda covers the north. However, some hikers want to start at Denton Hill and hike to Cross Fork, and since those backpacking trips go from one end of the trail to the other, either one will do the shuttle.
Wanda and John are both retired, so usually they are available, but if one of them is traveling, the other will cover any requested shuttles. On the rare occasion that neither is available, we can find someone else in the club who can help out.
We have never set a price or asked a specific amount, but we accept and appreciate donations that respect the cost of gas and vehicle use and time. There is no Uber or Lyft service out here, so people usually make a donation appropriate to their request, such as more for a long shuttle than a short one, and consideration for a larger number of people or for pets. A drive from Cross Fork to Denton Hill and back takes about an hour each way. Other sections like Cross Fork to Ole Bull or Denton to Patterson are shorter.
It is generally helpful to know in advance what day(s) and approximate times a shuttle is wanted, to schedule other activities around commitments we make for shuttles when possible. However, we do short notice shuttles when we can, including sometimes stopping whatever we are doing to shuttle the wet, the weary, or the blistered who call for help on occasion.
